Motorists are being encouraged to monitor their driving style and carry out essential car checks to save money on road trips this festive season.

Car insurance comparison experts at Quotezone.co.uk have shared their crucial checks to help drivers save money on fuel and reduce their carbon footprint.

Drivers should ensure their vehicle is in optimum condition by checking oil, fuel levels and tyre tread depth to ensure a safe trip before hitting the road.

Although it’s not illegal, having no fuel left in the tank could result in a £100 minimum fine for obstructing the road in an avoidable breakdown and runs the risk of damaging the vehicle.

Drivers should also consider the volume of luggage and presents being packed into the car as overloading a vehicle will use more fuel and waste money.

Planning ahead by mapping out the quickest route before setting off will also help save fuel by avoiding detours.

Another way to save money is to research the cheapest petrol stations on the journey to include as stop off points.

Motorists can also save fuel by staying aware of their driving technique – smooth and gentle ‘eco-driving’ will conserve fuel.

Travelling at slower speeds, reading the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking and changing up a gear earlier, can all help save fuel – plus turning off unwanted electronics such as the heating or air-con.

Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk said:  “Before heading off to see loved ones this Christmas, it’s important for drivers to ensure their vehicle is fit for purpose by carrying out safety checks on the tyres and liquid levels.

“Motorists should also unload any unnecessary weight to help cut drag and save fuel.

“By driving economically, avoiding harsh braking and changing up a gear earlier, drivers can save money on expensive fuel costs and help protect the environment.”

Here are Quotezone.co.uk‘s top five checks for a safe and cost-effective road trip:

  1. Tyre pressure

Check your tyre pressure with a gauge to avoid using more fuel and help avoid steering and braking issues.  Also ensure the tread depth meets the minimum requirements of 1.6 mm for the grip and safety of your car before heading off on long journeys.

  1. Oil and coolant levels

Use the vehicle dipstick to check the oil and ensure coolant levels are correct and not about to run low. Check the handbook if you are unsure what oil type your car requires.

  1. Fuel

Make sure you have enough fuel levels for your road trip this Christmas to avoid running out and risking a fine or penalty points for obstructing other vehicles with an avoidable breakdown.  Note Christmas closures and opening times for petrol stations may be varied throughout the festivities.

  1. Check your luggage

Check the weight restrictions on your vehicle to make sure the car is packed to a safe level. Any heavy luggage or Christmas presents may be weighing down the car which will increase the fuel usage.  Make sure nothing is blocking the visibility from the windows as this could lead to a £1000 fine and 3 penalty points.

  1. Eco-driving

Check your driving style by implementing eco-driving techniques to save money on fuel fill ups. Ensure smooth and gentle driving by travelling at slower speeds, avoid unnecessary braking by reading the road ahead as well as changing up a gear earlier. Turning off the air-con, heating or seat-warmers will also help save fuel.
