Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn has claimed the number one spot as the most popular movie on Amazon Prime Video in the US, following its premiere on the platform on December 22nd.
Following the launch, social poker site Replay Poker analyzed the social metric website Social Blade and discovered the movie’s two main co-stars have gained a massive boost in following on social media – each experiencing an increase of more than 250,000 over the last 30 days.
Since the film’s release on the streaming platform, it has become a viral sensation, with #Saltburn amassing a huge 1.6 billion views and counting on TikTok.
Saltburn may also have identified Hollywood’s newest heartthrob in the form of Australian actor Jacob Elordi – of former Euphoria fame and more recently, in the role of Elvis in Priscilla, released across the US in November 2023.
Not only have the film stars surged in popularity since appearing on Amazon Prime Video, but another beneficiary of the movie’s social media success is the soundtrack.
The research found there are currently 994 playlists identifiable on Spotify with titles including ‘Saltburn’, and arguably, the hit track of the movie Murder on the Dancefloor appears over 1,300 times across the public playlists.
The track by Sophie Ellis-Bextor soundtracks the movie’s final scene, and whilst the song hit the number two spot in the UK charts upon its release in 2001, the song has not demanded such attention in the US – until now.
The researchers at Replay Poker also analyzed Google Trends search data and found that searches for ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ have hit an all-time high, increasing 843% since tracking began 20 years ago.
In the last five years alone, interest in the song has increased an incredible 4,662% across the US – highlighting the staggering resurgence of the tune.
A spokesperson for Replay Poker commented on the findings: “It is fascinating to see the impact of social media on the success of film and TV as well as on the popularity of the stars on our screens. It is particularly interesting to witness the almost instant fame of Saltburn – with the movie having only been released to stream a matter of weeks ago, and yet it has gained immense traction online.
“It is clear that the way movies connect with their audience can have a great influence on wider media – exemplified by the newfound success of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Murder on the Dancefloor in the US for the first time, 23 years on since its original release.”
