Ankle boots have long been a staple of our capsule wardrobes, the silhouette has stood the test of decades of trends and remained ever-relevant today. With the style of boot being such a classic for our closets, how can we keep our ankle boots in top shape and style them in an updated way for 2024? Assistant Press Manager Charlie Cooke from Fairfax & Favor has shared her tips below:

Go for quality over quantity

It may seem obvious but higher quality boots are designed with comfort and lasting wear in mind. Cheaper fabrics or material bondings can result in uncomfortable shapes which do not favour your feet. Opting for higher quality and price point could prove more efficient as your boots last longer and become a go-to staple.

Break in boots which are firm upon purchase

Wearing your new boots round the house with thick socks to break them in is a tried and tested method that works. Trying walking around on carpet in your home to protect the soles of your shoes should you need to return them. This method is ideal if you have purchased a boot with a sturdier outer material. Getting used to the boots and allowing fabrics to mould slightly to your foot shape can provide more comfortable wear when you choose to wear your boots outside.

Go for a stretch panel boot if you have wider ankles

Chelsea boots offer the perfect flexibility for comfortable wear for those who prefer this in their ankle boots. Not only more flattering for wide feet, these boots are easy to slip on and off for comfortable wear. The style works exceptionally well as a fashion staple so you can be reassured it will not date.

Wear taller ankle boots to elongate your legs

Whether you are tall or short your goal may be to elongate your legs and choosing an ankle boot with a high-ankle fit is the perfect way to maximise this. For the best aesthetic, go for boots just above the ankle, you don’t want to go too high up the calf as this will provide a different silhouette.

Don’t wear ankle boots with cropped trousers

The proportions of these two pieces together typically does not work, you are better off finding the perfect length trousers to complement your boots. Straight leg trousers look best when styled with ankle boots which start where the trousers end and leave no gap exposing your ankles.

Find the perfect nude ankle boots to match your skin tone

If you are looking for the perfect nude boots, be sure to find ones which complement your natural skin tone. Pay attention to the undertones of neutral hued boots, look for ones with cooler or warmer undertones as suits. Choosing nude boots in your skin tone is a great tip to make your legs look longer, opting for clashing tones can have the opposite effect.

Don’t be afraid to pair socks with tights

Not only do socks provide extra padding if you have slim ankles or prefer extra warmth with your ankle boots but the combination of the two is right on trend at the moment. This look works best with flat ankle boots.

Wear heeled ankle boots to go from day to night

Heeled ankle boots are the perfect middle ground style for those who prefer flats to heels but still want the elevation of a heel. Much more comfortable than many other heeled shoes, ankle boots strike the balance between appropriate daywear and understated evening attire.

Most importantly, incorporate your own personal style and wear pieces you feel truly comfortable in.
