Plaid Cymru in Carmarthenshire is asking for an assurance from Tata about the future of the Trostre plant in Llanelli, which processes steel from Port Talbot to make packaging. Council officers have already been in discussions with local management for some months – and council Leader Darren Price today called for clarity from Tata chiefs about the plant’s long term future.
County Council Leader Cllr Darren Price, Plaid Cymru, said:
‘Following the news about Port Talbot, I’m deeply concerned about the future of the Trostre Works, which directly employs almost 700 people, as well as hundreds of contractor staff. Llanelli has lost thousands of jobs in heavy industries over the years and losing Trostre, a major employer for 70 years, would be devastating for the town and the wider region.
‘Tata invested £6m at Trostre in 2022 and all steel packaging material, such as the cans it produces for major customers like Heinz Baked Beans, are 100% recyclable. It would be truly perverse if a lower-emitting plant was to close as a result of Tata’s declared intention to be carbon net zero by 2045. 
Rhodri Davies the Westminster candidate for Plaid Cymru in Llanelli added ‘We must have clarity and an assurance from Tata about Trostre’s future as a matter of urgency to alleviate the serious worry amongst its workforce and their families.’
