Shavanah Taj, Wales TUC General Secretary and Commissioner on the Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales said:
“The Independent Commission’s report is a landmark contribution to the debate on Wales’s future.
“The recommendations are practical, pragmatic and, if implemented, would make a real impact on the quality of our democracy.
“It’s been a tough period for devolution in Wales. We’ve endured years of a Conservative UK Government that has often been openly hostile to the devolved settlement and that has systematically short-changed the Welsh Government on funding.
“We know there are right-wing groups actively trying to undermine devolution and the legitimacy of the Welsh Government. We have to be willing to be much more aggressive in exposing and tackling these actors – they are a poison in the lifeblood of our democratic system.
“It’s easy to by cynical about these constitutional issues and dismiss them as academic but we should recognise by now that where power lies matters, as does accessibility. I know from experience – whether that is during the Covid crisis or in fighting for fair work in Wales – that an empowered, confident devolved Government in Cardiff is vital to building a better, more just Wales.
“I congratulate our Chairs Prof. McAllister and Dr Williams, and fellow Commissioners on the publication of the report and thank them and the many officials who have worked tirelessly over the past two years.”
