Homeowners are being told to use houseplants as a natural way to eliminate unwanted odours in the home.

Green-thumbed experts at GardeningExpress.co.uk have revealed the seven houseplants which will remove bad odours and leave a fresh-boosting scent.

The experts say spider plants, peace lilies and aloe vera plants will not only add some greenery to the home but will also absorb any unwanted smells.

They advise placing them around the kitchen and the bathroom where unwanted aromas may be most present.

Humidity levels and the amount of sunlight the plants receive will need to be considered greatly to ensure their survival.

Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, said: “The last thing anybody wants is to walk in a home and be knocked back by a foul smell in the air.

“Cooking smells from curry and fish can have a pungent smell and be difficult to remove.

“However, incorporating house plants such as spider plants and Jasmine flowers can help provide a fresh, refreshing scent instead.”

Seven houseplants to eliminate bad odours:

  1. Spider plants

Spider plants can be a great way to breathe life into the room by purifying the air while absorbing foul odours. These can be placed in the bathroom as they love humidity and thrive in bright and indirect sunlight

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera purifies the air by eliminating common chemicals found in detergent and household cleaning products. They will need to be placed near windows which receive direct sunlight otherwise they’ll die out quickly.

  1. Bamboo palms

The extravagant, tall plants can make a room look stylish while purifying the air. They’ll need to be fed and watered regularly and receive a suitable amount of sunlight or the leaves will instantly fall off.

  1. Jasmine

The dainty flowers can give a room a rich, fruity scent to help remove unwanted smells. They look great as windowsill plants but make sure to monitor humidity levels to ensure their survival.

  1. Lavender

While lavender plants won’t necessarily remove bad smells, their strong aroma can help overcome any unwanted cooking smells. Just make sure to keep it in a bright sunny spot for it to thrive.

  1. Thyme

The spicy scent of thyme can be a great herb to grow on the windowsill and can provide a ‘punch’ aroma to the home.

  1. Peace lilies

The lilies can make a home look inviting and pleasant to look at while removing any unwanted smells by purifying the air and absorbing odour.
