Mumbles Rangers 2 – Pontyclun 1

Like the newly installed Big Wheel located at Mumbles head the wheel of fortune certainly turned for its football team.

Mumbles Rangers put on a spirited performance under the lights of the Swansea University sports ground to gain a much needed win and a very valuable three points.
The game had a cup tie feeling to it with Pontyclun giving the home team as good as they got in return.

Rangers slowly were gaining the upper hand in the first half with their defence superbly marshalled at the back by Craig Spring supported by centre back Liam Brown and fullbacks Alfie Brown and Adam Jones pushing up the pitch at every opportunity.

In fact it was Adam Jones who supplied a brilliant cross into the opponents 18 yards box which was met by Rangers striker Chrissy Allen who struck an unstoppable low drive into the back of the Pontyclun goal net.
1-0

Rangers were gaining confidence and control with their passing game. Ricky Kerr, Jordan Lloyd-Evans and Jake Simeone were on song in midfield and a second goal followed when Rangers forward Chrissy Allen powered a header from a pin point corner into the opponents net. 2-0

Rangers with a two goals cushion inexplicably took their foot off the gas and paid the penalty when Pontyclun’s Gruffudd Morgan pulled a goal back from close range.
2-1.

The first half ended with Rangers holding a slender one goal advantage.

The second half saw Pontyclun try to step the pressure on the home team and it took a palmed save over the crossbar by Rangers keeper Tai Williams to keep his side’s lead in tact. Pontyclun came close on a few occasions when the ball sailed across Rangers six yards box. Maybe a sign that Rangers fortunes from recent games was changing.

Rangers found their stride again and forward Chrissy Allen already with a brace of goals had some great half chances to be walking away with the match ball at the end of the game and add some comfort to the closing stages of this game.

Pontyclun tried to capitalise and pressure the Rangers defence into conceding an equaliser but Rangers were in no mood to let their opponents get back in the game and firmly bolted their defensive door right up to the final whistle.

A hard fought game which saw Rangers complete a season’s double over Pontyclun. Rangers must now use this as a springboard as they have key games looming in their fixture list.
