2023 saw a 20% jump in heat pump installations in the UK, but many homeowners across the country are wanting to understand the technology more before making the jump to this greener heating solution.
Before overhauling their existing combi boiler system, consumers want to be equipped with answers to questions such as ‘how does a heat pump work?’.
Dan Wilden, National Renewable Manager, at home heating expert Alpha gives his answer:
“An air source heat pump, like our Alpha Hydro or Magis M, takes low-temperature heat from outdoor air and increases the heat energy in an efficient way. This can then be transferred to heating systems in the home such as underfloor heating or the water circulating in your radiators. Electricity is used to power a fan compressor. The fan draws outside air over a large heat exchanger absorbing the heat from the air then the compressor raises the temperature further to make useful heat for the heating system.
“Heat pumps are powered by electricity so homeowners who have already invested in solar PV panels, or perhaps those who are seeking to overhaul their entire heating system in a bid to go greener, can make an even larger reduction in their carbon footprint.”
