MURDER TRIAL UPDATE | Two men have been jailed in connection with the murder of Ashley Sarsero.

James Alan Smith (pictured left), aged 35, was today sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years for murder.

Steven George Morgan (pictured right), aged 36, was jailed for four-and-a-half years for assisting an offender.

The murder inquiry was launched in September 2023 following the death of 26-year-old Ashley in Maestir, Llanelli.

Ashley died after being stabbed in the neck by Smith, while Morgan assisted by fleeing the scene and deliberately delaying the call for help to emergency services.

Speaking after the trial, Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Bevan said: “On behalf of Ashley’s family and friends, I would like to thank everyone involved throughout this investigation.

“The circumstances surrounding Ashley’s murder led to an intensive investigation, which required a huge amount of commitment and team effort from staff and officers from all force divisions and specialist departments.

“With permission and support from Ashley’s family, we will now work in collaboration with other agencies to educate and divert anyone who considers possessing a knife or blade within our communities, and to continue to target and prosecute those who do.”
