The Premier League launched the Fan Engagement Standard in 2023, aiming to strengthen club relationships, reinforce commitments and ensure long-term engagement with supporters — who are, as Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters puts it — the “lifeblood of football”.1

With this in mind, Ticketgum utilised ChatGPT’s image generator to reimagine what Premier League football fans would look like, based on ChatGPT’s physical and behavioural stereotypes of each football club.

Arsenal

Ticketgum can reveal that Arsenal fans, currently supporting their club’s title charge, are stereotyped as intellectual due to their possession-based football and their North London location. ChatGPT revealed Arsenal supporters are known for their dedication and have a very diverse fanbase.

“[The fans] show expressions of intellectual engagement and are depicted discussing tactics. The scene reflects the club’s reputation for having a knowledgeable fanbase, illustrating the analytical and passionate nature of Arsenal supporters.”

Liverpool

Liverpool supporters are stereotyped for their strong sense of local identity and pride in their City, as well as for their club’s anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The fans are known for their passion and atmosphere of unity and solidarity.

“The fans display expressions of passion, unity and resilience, reflecting the club’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. [The scene captures] the deep sense of community, enduring loyalty, and vibrant atmosphere that defines Liverpool’s fanbase.”

Manchester City

ChatGPT has labelled Manchester City supporters as “bandwagon fans” where the rise to success has led to fans only supporting the club because of their achievements. Despite this, ChatGPT does acknowledge that many supporters are deeply passionate about the club and its history.

“The image showcased the fans’ affluent attire, reflecting a cosmopolitan lifestyle, with a  focus on modern football tactics and passionate yet slightly entitled demeanour.”

Aston Villa

Ticketgum can reveal that ChatGPT stereotypes Aston Villa fans by their Midland pride, as the club is one of the leading clubs in the Midlands.

Additionally, there is a strong sense of historic pride among fans, where they value the club’s heritage and, of course, their claret and blue team colours.

“The fans show expressions of historic pride and unwavering support…they’re portrayed as passionate and vocal “

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are known for their fierce rivalry with Arsenal, adding intensity to their support.

ChatGPT also revealed that fans still see themselves as underdogs compared to the other big clubs in the league.

“Dressed in navy blue and white, showing expressions of ambition and mixed emotions, capturing the club’s quest for success. [Fans are] engaged and hopeful.”

Manchester United

ChatGPT highlights the pride and diverse fanbase of Manchester United supporters, known for their passionate and vocal presence at Old Trafford. However, ChatGPT also suggests fans are stereotyped as ‘Glory Hunters’, implying a greater interest in the club’s success rather than its history.

“The fans, in the team’s iconic red, show expressions of pride, success and global diversity. They’re more animated and expressive…emphasising the passionate and unified spirit of the club’s supporters.”

West Ham

West Ham supporters, stereotyped by ChatGPT for their East London pride, passionate support, and vocal presence, create a lively atmosphere and are, of course, recognised for their claret and blue kit.

“The fans, in claret and blue, display expressions of resilience and hardiness, reflecting the club’s historic working-class roots and the gritty spirit of its supporters. [They’re] passionate and vocal…capturing the enduring and spirited nature of West Ham United’s fan base.”

Brighton Hove and Albion

Brighton Hove and Albion, known for their support both at home and away, are recognised by ChatGPT for embodying progressive values, which mirror Brighton’s reputation as a liberal and inclusive city.

“The fans, in blue and white, show expressions of inclusivity, open-mindedness, and optimism, highlighting the progressive and welcoming nature of the Brighton community.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Ticketgum revealed that the Wolves are renowned for their passionate support, which contributes to an eclectic atmosphere during matches.

ChatGPT also acknowledges Wolves’ global support, represented by their diverse and international fanbase.

“The fans show pronounced expressions of strength, unity and passionate support. They’re portrayed as enthusiastic and loyal”

Newcastle United

ChatGPT stereotypes Newcastle United’s fan base as ‘Die-Hard Fans’, who are incredibly loyal and dedicated, despite the club’s lack of recent success. Additionally, ChatGPT recognises Newcastle fans’ loyalty, as they have faced considerable hardship and disappointment due to the club’s fluctuating performances.

“The fans…display expressions of unwavering loyalty and passion, symbolising the club’s intense fanbase and rich history. [The banners] highlight the club’s culture and community spirit, embodying the dedicated nature of Newcastle United supporters”.
