Whether it’s to check average pay, find the best performing schools, or to check the availability of superfast broadband in a particular area, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today launched a new service that makes it easier for people to explore local statistics.

Pulling together 57 local measurements, across topics that include the economy, education, health and wellbeing, the new ‘Explore Local Statistics‘ service brings together a wealth of data for easy analysis.

Sir Ian Diamond, National Statistician, said:

“It is an important service for everyone – from local and central government, devolved administrations, academia, the media, the private sector and all interested citizens, seeking detailed insight on research topics.

“It will help to ensure local leaders and the teams that support them, have access to the data, statistics, and analysis they need to make evidence-based decisions.”

Currently a Beta service, which will continue to evolve as its used, ‘Explore Local Statistics’ allows users to see how their search area is performing on a range of indicators, and how it has changed over time. Users can even compare other ‘clusters’ with similar demographic or economic characteristics – often a better indicator for how a local area is performing.

Emma Hickman, Deputy Director of Subnational Statistics, said:

“Data published by public bodies are often published across different websites or hidden in larger national datasets and can cover different geographical areas. It can be challenging for analysts and policy officials to access the information they need, let alone members of the public who might be moving home or just curious about their local area.

“Our new service gives people easy access to a range of measures all in one place and allows them to search by whatever local area is relevant to them.”
