Seafish are hosting an online engagement event for those with an interest in Welsh crab and lobster fisheries management plans.

Seafish, the public body that supports the UK seafood industry, is inviting stakeholders with an interest in Welsh crab and lobster fisheries to an online engagement event.

A Welsh crab and lobster fishery management plan (FMP) is being developed by the Welsh Government and is due for publication in 2026.

Before its release, Seafish wants to understand stakeholder’s aspirations for future management of the fisheries.

The free to attend event will offer an opportunity to discuss this and help shape the future of crab and lobster fishery management in Wales.

The engagement event will invite opinions on what current management works well and what could be improved, how stakeholders would like Welsh crab and lobster fisheries to be managed in the future, how they like to be involved in the next stages of FMP development and implementation and how best to build an understanding of any other challenges facing crab and lobster fisheries in Welsh waters.

Seafish wants to hear from a wide range of stakeholders including commercial and recreational fishers, seafood processors and wholesalers, NGOs, and scientists.

Jim Evans, Chair of the Welsh Fisherman’s Association, said:

“Getting Welsh fishermen involved at an early stage of the FMP development process is essential to ensuring the appropriate management measures are considered that ensure the long-term sustainability of these fisheries which are the mainstay for many coastal communities in Wales. The Seafish project, commissioned by Welsh Government, will be a great way for stakeholders to share their views and begin shaping the future of crab and lobster fisheries in the Welsh Zone, which are so important to so many people.”

An online event has been scheduled for Wales on Tuesday 30 April, 3pm-5pm. To register your interest in this event, please contact holly.kaiser@seafish.co.uk to receive an online link.
