New data from the Office for National Statistics analysed by Tara-Car Rental reveals fascinating insights into British travellers’ European adventures in 2023. With over 14 million visits, Spain secures its position as the undisputed favourite, capturing 26.74% of all trips to Europe. However, the data also highlights emerging hotspots where British spending has skyrocketed.

France claims the second spot with over 7 million British visitors, while Italy rounds out the top three with nearly 4 million arrivals. Greece, Portugal, and the Republic of Ireland also ranked among the favoured destinations, each offering unique draws.

The peak travel season fell in Q3, as expected when over 52 million European trips were recorded across just three quarters of 2023.

Beyond visitor numbers, the spending data paints an equally compelling picture. British tourists splurged over £11 billion in Spain, up 11.7% from 2022. France saw £5 billion in British spending, surging 22.97% year-over-year.

But it’s the emerging destinations that witnessed the most dramatic spending increases. Greece experienced a 15% spike with £3.3 billion in British expenditure. Italy saw a staggering 33.33% jump to £3 billion, while Portugal attracted £2.2 billion, an 8% rise.
