As sunlight hours increase and the weather begins to warm up, the nation is looking to take out their garden furniture and revamp their garden designs for spring, with searches for ‘garden design ideas’ increasing by 83% in the last 3 months1.

However, garden furniture experts warn that many homeowners could be damaging their garden furniture and tarnishing its quality by placing it in these very common areas.

Ali Wooldridge, Co-Founder of luxury garden furniture company, Gardenesque, advises not to place garden furniture on the grass over spring and summer, warning that it could lead to damp, mould, or rust.

Ali explains that by placing garden furniture on the grass, it increases its exposure to damp and moisture, which is the main reason for the appearance of damp, rust and mould.

“Not only does this ruin your furniture on an aesthetic level, but it will also lead to decay over time. Even furniture of the upmost quality won’t be able to withstand prolonged exposure to damp and moisture.”, she says.

Placement on your lawn will also damage or even kill your grass too, warns Ali. “It can minimise grass growth and potentially even leave you with bald patches.”

Positioning your garden furniture on a patio is best, according to Ali. Although she says to mindful of leafy areas, adding “Placing under trees and tall shrubs is fine, but it may require more regular cleaning of leaves and debris to upkeep appearances and quality.”

However, it’s important to keep your furniture covered with well fitted covers when not in use to keep it clean and fresh. “Furniture covers will also protect from leaves, dirt and garden debris that may be blown onto the furniture. Ensure that you regularly lift and waft your covering to allow airflow and prevent condensation, as this can lead to mildew”, she concludes.
