2023 saw another 1.9% rise in the number of boats on the canal network across England and Wales, and this number is expected to continue to increase this year.[1] This Boat Fire Safety Week leading solid fuel and biomass organisation HETAS is advising boat owners of the dangers of unsafe log burner practice with three key points to consider.

  1. Always buy Ready to Burn

Just as with stoves in houses, boat owners must ensure that they are only burning fuel that is certified as Ready to Burn. The easily recognisable Ready to Burn logo makes it easy for boaters to identify the fuel they should be buying and are legally allowed to burn. The Ready to Burn certification means that the wood fuel has a moisture content of 20% or lower, and so will release less harmful particulate matter when burned. Manufactured solid fuels are also labelled Ready to Burn certified as containing less than 2% sulphur content.

  1. Store Safely

Once you’ve secured Ready to Burn wood, it is important to ensure it is stored safely and correctly. Many boaters will be tempted to store their solid fuel on deck due to the limited space on narrow boats, but this can result in the fuel becoming damp and thus compromising its quality and efficiency of burning.

  1. Book in a sweep

All chimneys should be swept by a HETAS Approved Sweep at least once a year, sometimes more depending on usage and fuel type, and this is key in ensuring the safe operation of wood burning stoves on canal boats. Wood burning stoves should also be serviced annually to keep operating safely and efficiently. HETAS servicing technicians are on hand to give your appliances the expert care they need to keep boat owners safe.
