With sunny spells on the way across the UK this weekend, it’s the perfect opportunity to host bbqs with friends and family. However it’s important to stay alert to keep your home safe. Home expert, Matthew Harwood at Confused.com home insurance comments:

“As we’re finally seeing more sunshine, there’s no doubt that many might be planning to host friends and family over the weekend. And having a barbecue could be on the agenda. So if you’re dusting off your cooking tools, it’s important to remember fire safety so that everyone keeps safe and has a fun time.

“There are things to do to keep your barbecue safe. These include:

·        Never leaving the barbecue unattended

·        Keeping your barbecue away from overhanging trees or shrubs, and not right next to a shed either.

·        Making sure children and pets aren’t near the barbecue when it’s on, or when it’s cooling down after use.

“It’s also a good idea to keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to smother the fire in case flames become out of control. And in any case, it’s also good to know that most home insurance policies do cover for fire damage, should anything happen. This can include damage to a neighbouring property.”
