In response to comments made by Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates, during an interview on Politics Wales (9/6/24) regarding Vaughan Gething’s future as First Minister, a Plaid Cymru spokesperson said:
“Whether Vaughan Gething remains First Minister is a matter for Labour, but it is deeply regrettable that we have a Cabinet Secretary seeking to make the point today that Plaid Cymru are playing politics with this issue, when it is Labour who are undermining democracy in refusing to acknowledge the Senedd vote.
“This vote was no gimmick. It is clear that the people of Wales have lost confidence in the First Minister, and it is appears he has lost the support of the Labour group too.
“The First Minister says he wants a “new start” while pretending that he isn’t embroiled in a scandal. That’s not possible. At the very least a “new start” would have to begin with an apology and an acknowledgment that he displayed a significant lack of judgement. His continued refusal to do so reinforces the view that he must resign.
“Whilst Plaid Cymru too want to see rid of this Conservative UK government, it is hugely questionable that Labour are hiding behind this election as a means to keep Vaughan Gething in post. Wales deserves better.”
