Welsh Cycling is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Breeze in Wales, a female-only cycling program, with a special ‘Breeze on Tour’ cycling event throughout June. Breeze, established by British Cycling to empower women to begin their cycling journey, has flourished in Wales over the past decade.
Breeze has been instrumental in building confidence among women cyclists in Wales, inspiring many to pursue coaching, competitive racing, and personal fitness goals.
Robbie George, Welsh Cycling’s Head of Events and Development, expressed his excitement: “We are thrilled to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Breeze in Wales, our women’s only cycling program. Our Breeze Tour will feature rides to iconic and scenic locations across Wales, led by our dedicated Breeze Champions.”
Welsh Cycling is immensely proud of this milestone and the Breeze Champions who volunteer their time to inspire and empower women to cycle.
To mark this significant anniversary, Welsh Cycling encourages more women to get involved and try cycling. Throughout June, Breeze coordinators in South, West, and North Wales, alongside their Champions, will host a series of rides at iconic locations across the country.
The recent Women’s Tour of Britain, which visited Welshpool, Llandudno, and Wrexham on the 6th and 7th of June, was a tremendous success, with Breeze Champions leading out the race and bringing in the finish ahead of the pro peloton, further promoting women’s cycling.
In North & Mid Wales, the tour kicks off with rides to three UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Castles of Caernarfon & Conwy, the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales, and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Canal & Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen. Alex Aiken, Breeze coordinator for North Wales, shared: “We are very excited to celebrate 10 years of Breeze in North & Mid Wales. One of our Champions, Bonna, who trained on the first Welsh course, continues to lead rides, having led over 100 rides.”
In South Wales, participants will enjoy rides featuring Cardiff Castle and the Taff Trail, showcasing beautiful sites and scenery. Anna Buckland, Breeze coordinator for South Wales, noted: “Women’s cycling is thriving in South-East Wales. We have fantastic rides planned throughout June, including a picnic in Bute Park in Cardiff. It’s exciting to celebrate 10 years of Breeze and see so many women and girls getting involved in cycling.”
West Wales will feature rides to more iconic sites, with Swansea Bay serving as a hub for the region’s Champions. Lizzy Felton, Breeze coordinator for West Wales, said: “Pen-blwydd Hapus Breeze! It’s wonderful to be part of this tour. Breeze is an incredibly supportive program, making rides more enjoyable and helping women build lasting friendships.”
Welsh Cycling will share photos, videos, and stories from the Tour on its digital channels.
