Llandrindod Wells postcode least burgled in UK, according to new data

New research carried out by Anglian Home Improvements has revealed Llandrindod Wells is the safest postcode to be a homeowner in the UK, based on burglary statistics.

Homes in the safest postcode in the UK cost 22% less than anywhere else, at an average of £219,743.

The top 5 safest postcodes in the UK:

1. Llandrindod Wells: 84 burglaries
2. Harrogate: 395 burglaries
3. Truro: 411 burglaries
4. Dorchester: 477 burglaries
5. Torquay: 505 burglaries

Over the last 5 years, the also research found that June is the safest month overall with an average of 1197.34 burglaries across the country, while January is the least safe with 1433.30 – likely due to post-Christmas goodies and shorter daylight hours.

However, the summer months of July and August climb to 1224.38 and 1247.84 burglaries respectively. Home security expert, Rachel Munby at Anglian, has some tips for keeping your home safe during the summer, whether you’re at home or on holiday:

1. Secure all entry points: consider installing new windows and doors that incorporate deadbolts and shoot bolt locks on windows for added security.
2. Replace your door locks when you move in: Five lever mortice locks are very hard to force (and as such often required by insurance companies), and doors with cylinder locks are more secure when they have three star rated cylinders, like the Yale or Ultion ones Anglian Home Improvements installs in their range of doors.
3. Install a security system: Opt for systems with cameras, motion detectors, and alarm notifications. Smart home security systems can also be monitored remotely.
4. Maintain visibility: Keep your home’s exterior well-lit and ensure bushes and trees are trimmed to eliminate hiding spots for potential intruders. Motion-sensor lights are particularly effective.
5. Install laminated glass: laminated glass is a very strong safety glass, designed to withstand force without shattering and falling out of the frame. In England and Wales, it is required by law in “critical areas” (fixed windows up to 800mm from floor level, or up to 1,500mm for an opening door)
6. Consider triple glazing: new triple glazed windows not only improve energy efficiency, the extra pane of glass makes it much harder for an intruder to get through, and can slow them down in an attempted break-in. The longer it takes a potential intruder to break in, the more likely they are to get caught.
7. Pause deliveries to avoid signalling that the house is unoccupied. An overflowing mailbox is a clear sign of an empty home.

Rachel Munby, home security expert at Anglian Home Improvements adds: “It’s common knowledge that some areas of the country are “safer” than others, for various reasons, but no matter where you live it’s important to protect your home as best you can. Simple actions such as securing entry points and maintaining a visible presence can significantly reduce the risk of burglaries.

“Ensuring you have up to date fittings on your home, with working doors and windows, can also help. By their nature, double and triple glazing offer great security due to the added strength of extra panes of glass, but internal glazing can also help as it means the glass can’t be removed from the outside.”
