Off road biking in Llanelli area

“Dyfed-Powys Police is clamping down on illegal off-roaders in the Llanelli area after a number of complaints of off-roaders riding illegally and recklessly on footpaths. Areas affected include Penyfan quarry, Delta lakes, Sandy Water park, Trimsaran (near to the racecourse), Felinfoel, and the Millennium Coastal path.

Illegal off-roading can cause extensive damage to land, wildlife and natural habitats, and the anti-social use of off-road vehicles can also have a wider impact on our neighbourhoods and frighten residents.

It’s not just limited to noise nuisance; it can pose significant risks for other motorists and pedestrians.

Off-road bikes include a range of vehicles such as quad bikes and motorbikes, including scramblers and mini-motos.

  • Under Section 59 Police Reform Act 2002, officers can seize vehicles which are being used illegally, including prohibited off-road use.
  • Even if someone has permission to ride a quad bike on land, if they are found to be riding “dangerously” or “carelessly” (as defined by the Road Traffic Act 1991) they would be guilty of an offence even when they are driving off-road.
  • Persons riding a quad bike could on a footpath, bridleway or restricted bridleway would be guilty of an offence under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

Our Rural Crime officers are working with neighbourhood policing teams, Natural Resources Wales, Go Safe and the local authority to educate and engage with residents and visitors about the impact of anti-social off-road riding.

Llanelli Inspector Robert Evans said:

“We know that off-road bikes cause a nuisance and contribute to anti-social behaviour across our communities, and we as a force are committed to tackling those who cause problems.

We’d like to remind all members of the public – both those who live in these areas, and who travel here – that antisocial behaviour, littering, and reckless or illegal use of off-road vehicles will not be tolerated.

We want everyone to enjoy the beautiful unspoilt environment safely, responsibly, and lawfully, and as a result our officers will respond robustly to any reports of illegal or antisocial behaviour which damages the environment or threatens the safety or enjoyment of others.”

Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant, Ian Roach, added:

“The intelligence and reports provided by you, our communities, enable us to understand where there are problematic areas, as well as those who are responsible.

This behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are asking members of the public to continue supporting us to tackle this issue by providing information about off-road bikes in their area direct to us.”

  1. Why dont they tackle anti social behaviour in the towns, tackle shoplifters and other thieves, tackle knife crime –this makes more sense.

  2. Would a lot of these people riding illegally even use a purpose built motorcross track if it was built for them? most of them just want to twist the throttle up and down a straight I think there’s quite a lot of difference between motorcross riding on practice tracks and competing than local kids/adults riding on footpaths and quarrys etc

  3. There is plenty of Barron land in Wales in every authority, just build tracks for them,or lease the land to clubs at a reasonable rate
You will never ever ever stop mx bikes,
Unfortunately there is a minority that will spoil it for others the way they ride on footpaths etc,so build tracks

  4. Scrambling was invented and founded in wales as a sport. Yet you continuously feel the need to take this sport away…. Go catch some real criminals. Still waiting for someone to come and csi my shed after it got broken into. Also somebody to look at my cctv that shows someone mooching around my work van and caravan.

  5. Ram raid in talgarth powys thieves 25 min with a jcb in town n still the police didn’t catch. Says it all

  6. Having field bikes kept us out of trouble…should be encouraging the youth not only riding but comradery and mechanical skills…better than criminalising them…

  7. I often meet these guys while walking my dog,and they’re always respectful and considerate. Where is the evidence of the claimed ‘damage’? They’re just a bunch of kids with a skilled hobby… way better than drinking or using drugs etc.

  8. Why don’t councils and Natural resources put something there for bikers instead of confiscating and being authoritative .unts

  9. the police in brecon are also a taxi service they round up teenagers drop them home and then the same teenagers go out again and get the same taxi lol fcking joke what a waist of time and money,,wankers

  10. Your lucky these kids are doing this instead of everything else they can,Llanelli is fuckin dead only drug or drinking

  11. David Lynch it’s a corporation not out to kp people’s interests in mind only to make money for there company most stations these days ain’t even manned no Bobby on beat no more in my opinion

  12. Some of the youngsters on bike are really good competition stuff definitely but there’s no where for them to go and even if there not good they’ll soon will be cause it’s summing they love doing it’s a piss take how there’s no where for them to go

  13. Maybe stop closing places for people to go riding legally. Then it would stop so many of these issues.

  14. Keiran Parsons they are using them as transport, not just going on a field for fun, that’s a different matter, they are going to kill a little kid one day the way they are. Its far from a laughing matter.

  15. Even if someone has permission to ride a quad bike on land,if they are found to be riding “dangerously” or “carelessly” (as defined by the Road Traffic Act 1991) they would be guilty of an offence even when they are driving off-road.
Can you clarify this? Can police prosecute competitors on an organized event ?

    • Lee Heywood just say I had a farm and land,I could literally let my 12 year old drive about a car on my land and there’s nothing they can do. Definitely take it all the way mate

  16. Ceri Davies if they had a place to ride there wouldn’t be a problem blame the councils

  17. Keiran Parsons they are criminals, they’ve nearly hit more than one person, driving illegally and very dangerous is criminal.

  18. If they can spend millions on cycling paths then why can’t they find the money for the youngsters to go off road,it would be different if Wally waters rode offroad motorcycles.

  19. But can’t chase them so how do they catch and stop them??? They race up our street and back lane knowing fully well police won’t do anything anyway

  20. Chasing kids on off road bikes, whoooeeeee . Better off if they spent their time chasing drug dealers which a rife in the Dyfed Powys Area . I can’t walk through Carmarthen town, without seeing a deal being done,it sticks out like a sore thumb . They are queuing up around Catherine St lights area,it’s unbelievable .

  21. you’d think the police and council would listen to the comments and serve the people they are elected to police. Not a chance, and the best is to come, now we have a labour government in Westminster, you are about to get what you lot voted for! this is not going to be pretty!

  22. Keiran Parsonsif one of these Muppets kills or injures you child they become criminals so do we wait for that to happen while the country turns into the wild west ?

    • There’s plenty of land that could be handed to these kids to use give them a patch of land I stead of taking money and not giving them nowhere to use them

    • Josh Smiley Davies it would be a good thing but we don’t do anything to encourage good in Llanelli, anything which has sense is dismissed.
Or a business must try to build to get done.
Instead we throw money after chasing down in the problem!
Solutions are often better than problems!
      Before problems create solutions .

    • Josh Smiley Davies there’s a track at pembrey race circuit for beginners and experienced riders

    • Freddy Fnaf lol who’s paying stupid money for a shit track not everyone can afford it and not everyone can sort a lift up to pembrey

    • Emrys Morgan you all ask for tracks I just told you where there was one.
Maybe when a few kids get killed by wheelies into oncoming traffic the parents will say wish I’d taken time to put them on an official track.
      How’s that sound.

    • Freddy Fnaf they have closed all the local places pontyberem,Cynheidre not everyone can travel an hour away

    • Richard Jones problem is noise and illegal riding to the tracks.
Then there’s the responsibility of deaths or accidents.
If you all get together for the council to provide the land then your going to need someone to run it.
Fence it and get public liability insurance.
      Then your good to go.

    • Emrys Morgan I get that but riding illegally and in some cases irresponsibly will lead to deaths of kids, which no parents want Inc the ones on here who say it’s ok to do.
They will all look for someone to blame if it’s their kid killed but will never blame themselves.
I agree land should be available but it needs to be a legal track and run by parents who will need to fence it off and construct the track introduce rules and get public liability insurance.
You can crowd fund for that as there are so many kids needing this type of organisation and the parents as well.

    • Freddy Fnaf I would happily contribute but shame the council won’t as they would rather waste the taxpayers money on unnecessary developments in the area that are not things people ask for such as a track

    • Emrys Morgan any council land that’s being ignored by your council overgrown, quarry or storage areas?.
Petition get parents to write to local m.ps or a/m keep pushing, petition and don’t give up.
It’s a fight but you can get there.
Mist people will sign a petition if they know it will be out of ear shot and will stop illegal riding.
People will sigh if relief lol.
I ran one in Merthyr years ago and in abercynon.
It was a fight for both places but it did get done.

    • Freddy Fnaf council should be doing this for youngsters though they put other events on so why can’t they sort so.ething out for children to enjoy themselves on the bikes

    • Richard Jones yeah I understand but they won’t do it due to budget cuts and the lack of care.
It would cost them thousands to run one legally and maintaining it just wouldn’t be economical but as a private group or business you can call on the help from locals with jcb it st John’s etc .
If you all really feel this strong about a place for your kids don’t look for walls look for the cracks and make it happen.
It’s easy to shout and blame than to start action.

    • Freddy Fnaf Just shows how council and police don’t care about the safety of people and are more focused on the money they get from taking bikes and partnering up with Ken Williams so they can rob people for money.

    • Emrys Morgan look mate I don’t do political shit because I don’t care about them to be honest but as I said I set up two Motorcross courses in my past and yes it’s a fight and yes it will take up time.
But I didn’t blame others because it was a little hard not did I stand back and watch kids get killed.
If all you want to do is shout then carry on.
If you want something done then do it.
I don’t have all the answers and Im not you.
There’s a lot of people on here that want somewhere maybe one of you lot have the balls to start fighting and not crying.
Iv tried to help you in the right direction best I can.
Sorry if it’s not what you need to hear.

  23. Obviously nothing better to do than bother motocross riders. Nowhere to be seen when an actual crime is being committed. About time people start ignoring the police and doing there own thing.

  24. Its not about giving them somewhere to go if they drove them safely and appropriately people wouldn’t have issues ive seen so many close misses i have tax and insurance to drive on road what do they have .

  25. Nice to see they got enough officers to chase motorbikes but if you report knife crime in Llanelli they give you a reference number !!

  26. Give them somewhere legal to go then that doesn’t cost £40 a day to use. The government is quick enough to accept the taxes from selling these bikes but doesn’t give anything back or give you anywhere to use them. You stop these kids from getting out and enjoying and they’ll sell drugs on the streets instead and hang around in gangs. It’s all about taking and not giving back in the UK.

  27. Stop picking on kids having fun got nothing better to do with your self…if they dangerous to the public on road then the public shudnt be on road stop picking on the kids

    • Tim Watson they like picking on kids.. makes them look big.. to scared to sort real crime out.

    • Tony Skilton may aswell use it made for push bikes but no offence most them on main roads another waste off money

  28. Obviously these “off road”places need to be converted into cycle paths and get them off the dangerous roads

    • Angelo Conti driving off road motcrossers on to main roads think again this has happened in our area.

  29. Obviously it’s a popular thing otherwise there wouldn’t be so many complaints
Instead of seizing bikes and being knobs maybe they could educate the people on where to ride safely

  30. How about you and the council give land so they can ride safely,no place for people to ride them off road around Llanelli.

    • Matthew Lee Lloyd well said they got all this common land and when people go up on the bikes to get off the streets the police get petty and take there bikes so then they get other bikes and use them on the streets it’s the police fault why it’s ended up like this blame your selves you muppets
