Speaking after the Cabinet Meeting, Independent Councillor Rob James stated “This loan extension proposal raises a number of questions that require answers.
“Whilst it is right that the Council should support local businesses and sport teams, none of the £2.4 million loan has been repaid to date and it’s already been 16 years. I recognise that the team is in a tough financial position, yet many families across Carmarthenshire have also been struggling during that time.
“If the loan is to be extended we must look again at the additional three years grace period that has been offered to the Scarlets, as well as the possibility of increasing community benefits, such as the usage of facilities by local schools during quiet periods.
Cllr Rob James noted that the decision would now need to be signed off by a majority of all Carmarthenshire Councillors and that he “wouldn’t rule out” amending the loan extension to get a better deal for taxpayers.
