As the new school year approaches, parents are preparing for significant expenses, with research from Hodge indicating that back-to-school costs could reach up to £1,100.

A survey by the Children’s Society shows that school uniforms are a major expense, with parents spending an average of £422 annually on secondary school uniforms and £287 on primary school uniforms.1

Additionally, commuting to and from school, typically 1 to 2 miles each way, could result in annual fuel costs of £136.80 for petrol and £115.90 for diesel.2

Research also shows that the average cost of a packed lunch is now £518.70 per year.3

Christie Cook, managing director of retail at Hodge, said: “Affording new uniforms can be challenging for some families, but there are alternatives. Second-hand uniforms can be found on platforms like Vinted or eBay, in charity shops, and through school uniform recycling schemes.”

“When it comes to school meals, create a weekly meal plan, and buy in bulk. Preparing meals in advance and using leftovers can save both money and time. Search for vouchers and involve your child in meal planning to reduce waste and educate them on the value of money, in addition to healthy eating, this can help manage your lunch budget.”

“To save on fuel costs, car-sharing can help reduce expenses and CO2 emissions. So talk to other parents, see if they live nearby and take it in turns to take the kids to school, this won’t only help with cost but will give you that much needed time in the mornings or afternoons to do other life admin. Alternatively, you could consider alternative travel options like public transport or walking/ cycling, if feasible.”

Ease the stress of huge payouts by putting some money aside in a savings account to better prepare.

By setting aside £85 a month in an ISA for a year could cover new school uniforms, packed lunches, and fuel for one school year.
