Lady asks for donations to charity for 80th birthday milestone

A selfless Pembrokeshire woman has celebrated her 80th birthday by asking for donations to charity in lieu of gifts.

Hilary Hitchings decided that instead of accepting gifts, she would ask for donations to two chosen charities, Wales Air Ambulance and Paul Satori Hospice at Home.

The popular lady, who has been a chairwoman of the fundraising committee of RNLI for 20 years, received an incredible £1,040 from friends and family at her birthday party, which was split equally between both causes.

Generous Hilary from Hook, followed in the steps of her partner Colwyn Elliot who also asked for donations in lieu of gifts for charity, when he turned 80. Colwyn received £554 which was also donated to the Wales Air Ambulance.

Hilary and Colwyn both recognise and support the work of Wales Air Ambulance – providing a valuable service in the rural area of Pembrokeshire.

Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and, if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. For the patient, this can mean hours saved when compared to standard care and is proven to greatly improve survival and early recovery.    

It is delivered via a unique Third Sector and Public Sector Partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the Charity’s vehicles.

Hilary raised an incredible amount for two important charities and the Wales Air Ambulance is extremely grateful. It is wonderful to hear that Hilary’s partner also did the same when he celebrated his 80th birthday, what a kind-hearted couple they are.
