Commonwealth Sport is holding the 2024 Africa and Europe Regional Meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, looking to drive closer collaboration between Commonwealth Family members in the two regions.
The second of three Commonwealth Sport Regional Meetings will take place 7-8 October, with 30 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) expected to attend. The Oceania and Asia Regional Meeting was held in the Maldives 22-23 September, with the Caribbean and Americas Regional Meeting in Turks & Caicos on 16-18 October.
The meeting is an opportunity for CGAs to share learnings on sport development and meaningful social impact that the Commonwealth Sport Movement can influence. The meeting will also focus on the vision for a ‘reset and redefined’ Commonwealth Games – looking at how the 2026 Games will be an important first step in the development of a co-created, flexible, and sustainable Games of the future.
Commonwealth Sport President Chris Jenkins arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, on Friday to meet Commonwealth Games Kenya President Paul Tergat, the CGA Executive Board and National Federations, and addressed local media.
”We hope that this meeting of our African and European CGAs will foster stronger relationships both within the two continents but also across the two continents. There is much to learn from each other culturally, and how we can work together in sport, diplomacy, economically and socially,” said President Jenkins. ”The meeting is also an opportunity to discuss 2026 and the Games of the future, having started with the discussion of a future Games being hosted in Africa.”
The Mombasa meeting will provide the opportunity for Commonwealth Games Kenya to showcase its sporting achievements, culture and diversity, to support their ambition in hosting international sporting events.
Over the coming days, the Kenya CGA will highlight the local impact of the Commonwealth Sport eqUIP programme, which focuses on youth development and leadership training, featuring young Kenyans and staff who have benefitted from the programme and showing the broader impact it has had on sports development in Kenya.
Commonwealth Games Kenya is promoting the “Cheza Healthy” initiative, focusing on the importance of physical activity and promoting wellness among young Kenyans, and how the values of the programme link to sports and global events such the Commonwealth Games.
