With Halloween around the corner, many will be taking their children out to trick-or-treat around local areas. But with this comes a reminder to drivers to be extra cautious around residential areas. Rhydian Jones, motor expert at Confused.com car insurance comments:

“When driving on Halloween, it’s especially important to stay alert and cautious, as streets will be filled with children trick-or-treating out in the dark. And for those driving around wearing fancy dress themselves or with others who are, be sure to not let the costumes distract you. That’s as nearly 1 in 5 (16%) admit they’ve been distracted by fancy dress while driving before.

“If you’re driving around a residential area, remember to stay vigilant of pedestrians who might be running around and not paying as much attention. You should:

–            Keep to the speed limit and be extra vigilant: Children may unexpectedly cross the street, so stay alert and reduce your speed at all times.

–            Turn on your headlights earlier than usual: This increases your visibility to both children and other drivers, even before dusk.

–            Be cautious around parked cars: Children might dart out from between vehicles, so drive slowly and anticipate sudden movements.

“You should always be focused and aware on the roads, but especially at night in residential areas when children might be around. For more advice, our guide to driving safely at night will help with other tips and tricks to keep you prepared for darker days on the road.”
