Transport and travel union TSSA is reminding the public using the railways and bus network about the need to respect workers and fellow passengers alike during the festive season.
The move follows the death of Jorge Ortega, a railway worker who died after being attacked at Ilford station last Wednesday night and comes at a time when TSSA is running a high-profile campaign calling for an end to violence against transport workers.
Responding to the tragic news of the transport worker killed following the assault, TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust issued the following statement:
“This shocking incident serves as a grim reminder of the unacceptable levels of violence faced by transport workers. The loss of a colleague in such tragic and violent circumstances highlights the urgent need for action to protect those who keep our transport systems running.
“While many people are celebrating the season with parties and gatherings, countless transport workers are working tirelessly to ensure everyone gets home safely. These workers deserve respect and protection, yet too often they face threats, aggression, and now, tragically, fatal violence.
“Let me be clear: violence, abuse, or threatening behaviour towards transport staff is not only morally reprehensible but also a criminal act that carries severe consequences. This cannot and must not be tolerated.
“Our demand is clear – employers, passengers, and the government must take immediate action. We call on them to stand with us to ensure transport workers are treated with the dignity and safety they deserve, not just during the holiday season, but every day of the year.”
