Poor organisation can lead to Christamas decorations taking up a lot of space and it can also make it harder to get everything out the following year.
The home experts advise using household items such as empty wrapping tubes, egg cartons and hangers to help pack away things like lights and garlands efficiently.
Cat Wiltshire from Online-Bedrooms.co.uk said: “Packing away Christmas decorations can feel like a hassle but taking your time will help store everything in an efficient way, making it much easier to get everything out next Christmas.
“If you’re not careful when packing decorations away, they can end up taking up a lot of space in your home. This can also lead to damaged and tangled decorations which you’ll have to deal with eventually.
“There are lots of ways you can make things easier. Maximise your space by wrapping things like garlands around tubes of empty wrapping paper and label boxes as you go so you know exactly where everything is next year.”
Space saving hacks to store Christmas decorations:
Nest decorations inside one another
Be smart when packing items away and nest smaller decorations inside larger ones. For example if you own any decorative jars, use them to store things like ribbons and small ornaments.
Use plastic boxes
Plastic boxes are great for storage because they are easy to stack on top of each other which can help you maximise your space. Clear boxes will allow you to easily see which items are inside each box or consider labelling them.
Garlands
Garlands can be tricky to store and often end up taking up more space than they need to. To store them in a compact way, save an empty wrapping paper tube to wrap the garland around. This will keep it neat and prevent any tangling.
Vacuum pack soft decorations
Consider vacuum packing soft decorations like stockings, small plush toys and Christmas themed pillows, tea towels and tablecloths. Avoid vacuum packing any items with delicate parts that could be crushed.
Make use of suitcases
If you have empty suitcases in your home, store some decorations in them. Just make sure the decorations are also stored in boxes before putting them inside the suitcase. This way when you come to use the suitcase you won’t have to unpack a load of Christmas decorations.
Use over the door hooks
Wreaths, garlands and other large decorations can also be kept on over the door hooks or hangers in attics, garages or storage rooms. This will keep them from getting tangled and will save space.
Wrap lights around household items
If you want to avoid a tangled mess next Christmas, wrap your lights carefully around things like cardboard cutouts or empty wrapping paper tubes. It’s also worth labelling your lights so you know exactly what goes where the following year without having to turn them all on.
Use egg cartons for delicate items
If you own any delicate ornaments and baubles you’ll want to store them separately to everything else. Empty egg cartons can be a great place to keep these items, for extra protection wrap them in bubble wrap or tissue paper.
