Interior designer reveals 5 simple home office tweaks that will boost your 2025 productivity

·       Expert reveals positioning your desk at a 45° angle can improve focus

·       Remote working Google searches reach 1.4 million searches this month alone

As hybrid working continues to dominate in 20251, creating a workspace that enhances focus and well-being is more important than ever. With Google searches for ‘remote working’ reaching 1.4 million in the past month alone showing, a rise of 8% over the last 30 days, it’s clear that more people are prioritising home office setups.

Leading office furniture specialists Furniture At Work have teamed up with interior design expert Ryan McDonough from MyJobQuote.co.uk to share the top trends and tips for designing a productive home office.

From productivity-boosting colour palettes to desk placement strategies and creative accessories, here’s how to create a workspace that works as hard as you do.

1.     Paint the walls green (and blue) for productivity

Ryan McDonough highlights the power of choosing the right colours for office walls:

“Greens and blues are soothing colours that can help you stay focused, but avoid tones that are too bright or dark, as they can be distracting. Instead, look for warm undertones like blue-grey or green-grey to ensure the office doesn’t feel cold or clinical.

“In smaller offices, coordinating neutrals like pinkish-whites or light greys can break up deeper colours and avoid overwhelming the space.”

2.     Optimise desk placement

Desk positioning can make or break productivity, Ryan explains:

“Place desks near windows to benefit from natural light but avoid high-traffic or noisy views. Positioning the desk at a 45° angle to a window works best as it ensures plenty of light and fresh air while avoiding screen glare or draughts.

“If a desk needs to go near a wall, it’s better to be facing into the room rather than towards the wall, so it doesn’t feel claustrophobic or cut off.”

3.     Upgrade to smart lighting

With over 158,000 Google searches in the past month alone, smart lighting is becoming a key trend in office design for 2025.

Smart lighting systems allow workers to adjust brightness and colour temperature throughout the day to align with their circadian rhythms (biological clock), improving focus and reducing eye strain. Warm lighting in the morning and cooler tones in the afternoon can help maintain energy levels.

4.     Invest in health-focused tech and furniture

In 2025 we’re already seeing ‘tech’ furniture come into the market with an increased health focus. Ergonomic chairs with posture correction features, desks with integrated charging stations, and wearable tech that reminds you to take breaks or stretch are becoming essential additions to the modern home office.

5.     Accessories the space

Ryan recommends incorporating “pops of yellow or red to inject energy and warmth into a workspace, particularly in neutral colour schemes that might otherwise feel too bland. A yellow desk lamp or a red office chair can brighten up an area without overwhelming it.

“Plants are another office accessory option, as they not only make a space more inviting but also improve air quality. Meanwhile, abstract wall art can inspire creativity—just be sure to keep it minimal so the space doesn’t feel cluttered.”

Whether you’re seeking ways to optimise your desk placement, embrace calming colours, or incorporating health-focused tech, these simple changes can transform your home office into a space that fuels productivity and creativity.
