Gardeners are being warned to check the temperature of their greenhouse or face the risk of losing young seedlings.

The experts at GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk are urging gardeners to ensure greenhouses and the plants growing in them are protected from the elements and dips in temperature.

In the UK if temperatures dip below 5°C, tender plants in a greenhouse can be at risk. The temperature plants can survive depends on the type of plant and how cold it gets.

To give plants the best chance of survival during cold spells, the experts are encouraging gardeners to plan ahead and take precautions.

They suggest filling in small cracks and holes, investing in a greenhouse heating system and wrapping tender potted plants in bubble wrap.

A spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk said: “The weather at this time of year is very unpredictable and temperatures can dip suddenly. But prepared means you have every chance of saving tender seedlings you’re nurturing in the greenhouse.

“There are some simple ways gardeners can make sure the greenhouse is warm enough. Filling small cracks and holes is a quick fix which will make a big difference. Covering plants with fleece and bubble wrap are both cost effective ways to keep them warm.

“Long-term, consider a greenhouse heating system and investing in insulation blankets to help keep your greenhouse at the right temperature.”

Here are GardenBuildingDirect.co.uk’s tips for keeping your greenhouse warm during cold weather:

Fill small cracks and holes

Small cracks and holes may look harmless but they can result in heat loss from your greenhouse. Gaps are common in greenhouses, often caused by weather changes and ageing. Seal up any gaps to keep the heat in.

Cover plants with fleece

On very cold nights, think about covering your plants with horticultural fleece to give them added protection. Remove it during the day so plants get the light and ventilation they need,

Insulation blankets

Covering your greenhouse with insulation blankets is a cost-effective way to reduce heat loss and improve heat retention. Use it at night time when temperatures drop and simply drape it over or attach to the frame.

Bubble wrap

Applying bubble wraps to windows and pots inside the greenhouse is a good way of keeping the heat in. It’s also a cost effective option.

Heating system

Heating mats or fan heaters are a good option to warm up your greenhouse and they won’t increase humidity. Do only use them on the coldest days to keep energy bills down.

Sunlight

Allowing sunlight in is the best way to keep plants in your greenhouse alive and well. Think about the location of your greenhouse and where possible, keep it free from shade, trees or other buildings.
