Dr Manish Sinha: “Reality TV and social media will continue to shape beauty ideals, but true confidence comes from making decisions based on personal comfort rather than external influences.”
Reality television has long influenced fashion, lifestyle, and social behaviours.
But in recent years, its most striking impact has been on beauty standards. Few shows exemplify this more than Love Island, which has played a key role in the rising demand for cosmetic enhancements. Known for its contestants with sculpted physiques and flawless complexions, the show has helped normalize aesthetic treatments that were once considered niche.
This shift, often referred to as the Love Island Effect, has reshaped public perceptions of beauty. Treatments once reserved for celebrities and the ultra-wealthy are now widely accessible, with non-surgical procedures such as Botox, fillers, and skin boosters becoming as common as hair treatments or skincare routines.
Dr Manish Sinha, a leading plastic surgeon, acknowledges both the positives and the risks of this trend. “Aesthetic procedures, when done responsibly, can be transformative for a person’s confidence. What has changed is how people perceive these treatments. They are no longer seen as medical interventions but rather as a normal part of self-care
He explains, “While this shift has empowered many to take control of their appearance, it has also raised concerns about unrealistic beauty expectations and trends that may not suit everyone.
“The growing demand to match these ideals poses risks to both physical and emotional well-being.”
Here, Dr. Sinha sheds light on the rise of these trends and how individuals can make informed choices about cosmetic procedures.
The Reality TV Beauty Boom
“The influence of Love Island extends beyond the screen. Contestants frequently discuss their cosmetic enhancements, openly crediting procedures for their polished looks. This visibility has helped remove the stigma around aesthetic treatments, leading viewers to seek similar enhancements.
“Cosmetic procedures, when performed responsibly, can boost confidence and allow individuals to refine their appearance. However, the increasing demand for a “perfect” look has led to rushed, trend-driven treatments. Some former Love Island contestants have spoken about the pressures to maintain their enhanced appearance, with several admitting to becoming reliant on Botox and fillers to keep up with expectations. Others have faced complications requiring corrective procedures, including severe swelling, asymmetry, and the financial burden of additional surgeries, realities that are rarely publicised.
“A common misconception is that cosmetic work is easily reversible. Many individuals, influenced by social media and reality TV, undergo significant alterations without realising that some changes, such as exaggerated jawlines or overly sculpted noses, may be permanent and difficult to correct.
Aesthetic Empowerment vs. Social Pressure
“For some, aesthetic treatments are a positive, confidence-boosting decision that helps them feel more comfortable in their own skin. When done for the right reasons, such as correcting asymmetry, restoring volume lost with age, or refining natural features, plastic surgery can be life-enhancing. Patients who make informed decisions often report greater self-assurance after undergoing procedures tailored to their needs.
“However, the rise of social media and influencer culture has blurred the line between personal choice and societal pressure. Edited images, beauty filters, and curated online personas have made enhanced features appear to be the norm, leading many to seek procedures driven by fear of missing out rather than genuine desire.
I have seen a growing number of patients in their early twenties seeking eyelid surgery, a procedure once common only for those over 35. Similarly, the fox-eye lift, which combines surgery and thread lifts, has become highly sought after despite being driven more by social media than medical necessity.
“Many who start with minor enhancements find themselves caught in a cycle of repeated procedures to maintain results. What begins as a single tweak can lead to continuous adjustments, creating a dependency on aesthetic interventions.”
Understanding the Risks and Rewards
“Despite the benefits of cosmetic procedures, it is important to recognise that these treatments, whether surgical or non-surgical, are still medical interventions. While advancements have improved safety and results, every procedure requires careful consideration.
“In recent years, there have been numerous cases of botched surgeries linked to the desire to emulate reality TV stars. Some individuals, lured by cheaper treatments abroad, have returned with severe complications requiring urgent medical attention.
“Plastic surgery, when performed responsibly, is not about following trends but about achieving balance and harmony in one’s features.
As a surgeon, my role is to guide patients towards choices that enhance their natural beauty rather than alter their identity. The patient must take a long-term perspective, considering what will age well and suit their overall look rather than chasing temporary trends.
“Patients who consult reputable practitioners, research their options, and set realistic expectations are far more likely to be satisfied with their results. The most successful cosmetic procedures enhance confidence subtly and naturally rather than drastically altering one’s appearance.”
A New Chapter for Aesthetic Medicine
The Love Island Effect is part of a broader movement that has made cosmetic treatments more accessible and accepted than ever before. For many, this is a positive step, breaking down stigma and offering solutions for those who wish to enhance their appearance. Medical advancements have also improved safety and outcomes, benefiting patients seeking both aesthetic and functional treatments.
“However, as cosmetic procedures become more mainstream, it is more important than ever to educate individuals about the realities behind these enhancements. Aesthetic treatments should be viewed as a choice rather than an expectation. The best approach prioritises individual suitability, professional guidance, and a focus on long-term beauty rather than fleeting trends.
“Reality TV and social media will continue to shape beauty ideals, but true confidence comes from making decisions based on personal comfort rather than external influences. With the right approach, aesthetic treatments can be an empowering tool that enhances rather than defines a person’s self-image.
