Queen Elizabeth High School careers event

Students from across Carmarthenshire were able to talk to local health and care services staff about their future careers in an event held in January.

The event, ‘Next steps to future success’, aimed at Year 10 pupils, was organised by the county’s Queen Elizabeth High School, and supported by Hywel Dda University Health Board. There were sixty-five employers in attendance overall.

The event provided students with an insight into the wide range of opportunities available within our local NHS. Students were able to get involved in activities with health professionals, such as using foetal gestation and birthing models, dentistry models, vascular/neurological assessments using Huntleigh doppler ultrasound equipment, monofilament pen test and tuning fork.

12 departments from showcased a range of career opportunities, including nursing, finance, digital services, podiatry, pathology/blood sciences, future workforce.

Lisa Gostling, Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said, “I am proud of our teams who supported this event. They have helped inspire these students to hopefully choose a career in health, having shown them the many diverse roles within our health board.”

Lydia Rhys, Personal Development and Community Co-ordinator for Queen Elizabeth High School, said “I am thankful for all the local employers who attended, including those from our local NHS. Our young people greatly appreciated the chance to further understand the roles available in health care.”

Around 1,500 pupils attended from Queen Elizabeth High School, Coedcae School, Ysgol Emlyn, Bryngwyn School, Ysgol Dyffryn Taf and Ysgol Dyffryn Aman and Ysgol Glan Y Mor.
