Searches for ‘remote jobs’ increase by 87% as UK economy shrinks and the job market becomes increasingly unstable

Analysis of Google Trends data reveals that searches for ‘remote jobs’ soared worldwide by 87% on 17th March.

The analysis, by experts at employee benefit app, Go Joe, suggests that workers are looking for new opportunities by working from home while fearing that their current jobs are at risk. The recent announcement of Labour’s £40 billion tax rise has caused employers to reduce hiring and Brits to fear whether their current jobs are secure.

Will Turner, CEO of Go Joe, commented on the findings,

“The recent increase in searches for remote jobs suggests a growing interest, with many looking for remote positions that are potentially safer than other roles. Many new positions are being advertised on job sites, such as Indeed and Reed, with entire sections dedicated to remote opportunities.

“Remote roles have become an increasingly popular option, especially since the pandemic hit, when companies realised they could save office costs by having staff work from home. These roles are also extremely beneficial for those at risk of losing their jobs, as they are not limited to working for companies that are in the area they can commute to.

“Remote roles can equate to more job security as these roles are costing companies less to maintain, due to a reduction in costs for office space, Wi-Fi, and other facilities. Therefore, there is less chance that companies will need to cut jobs due to site closures. Higher job satisfaction and flexibility can also lead to improved job retention.

“However, remote jobs can be more of a challenge to secure due to employers having a larger pool of talent to choose from, potentially at a lower wage. This makes remote roles much more competitive that in-office jobs.”
