Scurvy Resurgence in Wales: How Nutritional Neglect can Impact Dental Health

A resurgence of scurvy, a disease once thought to be confined to history, has been identified in the UK, with health professionals particularly concerned about cases in Wales. Doctor Dana Beasley, Wales deputy officer at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, recently raised her concerns Senedd’s health committee (source).

Scurvy is caused by a deficiency in vitamin C and can lead to serious health issues, yet many remain unaware of its risks. Dr Vijay, founder of full-mouth dental implant provider 21D, explains the link between nutrition and oral health and how to prevent lasting damage.

Throughout history, scurvy was commonly associated with sailors who lacked fresh fruits and vegetables during long voyages. Today, however, its resurgence points to a deeper issue: a significant portion of the population may not be consuming adequate amounts of essential nutrients, particularly vitamin C.

“This vitamin is crucial for the synthesis of collagen, which is vital for the health of our skin, blood vessels, and connective tissues. One of the most severe consequences of vitamin C deficiency is the deterioration of gum health.

“Without sufficient vitamin C, the gums can weaken, leading to infections and increased susceptibility to dental diseases; over time, this can even result in tooth loss, as weakened gum tissue fails to support the teeth properly.

“Despite the potentially serious consequences, many individuals are simply not aware of their vitamin C intake or its critical role in maintaining oral health.”

Reports indicate that various factors contribute to the rise of scurvy in Wales: economic constraints play a significant part, with budgets often limiting access to fresh produce and changing people’s dietary habits.

The increasing prevalence of processed foods, which often lack essential nutrients, exacerbates the situation. As a result, individuals may unknowingly fall into a cycle of poor nutrition, leading to deficiencies that can have serious health implications. Dr Vijay explains that one of the most alarming consequences of scurvy is its impact on dental health due to

Dr Vijay emphasises that dental professionals should not only provide restorative treatments but also educate patients about the importance of vitamin C-rich foods — such as citrus fruits, strawberries, and leafy greens — in maintaining strong gums and preventing tooth loss.

The resurgence of scurvy in Wales serves as a stark reminder of the importance of nutrition in maintaining dental health,” concludes Dr Vijay.

“Professionals in the health and wellbeing space must work together to raise awareness about the link between vitamin deficiencies and oral health issues. Addressing the nutritional needs of our communities can help us prevent the re-emergence of diseases like scurvy, protecting our patients’ smiles for years to come.”
