Coming in 2027: Wales is all set to host a stage of the Tour de France. For the first time in history, both the men’s and women’s Grand Départs will begin in the same country – outside France – and Wales will play a central role in this milestone event.

Wales will make history in 2027 as it hosts the Tour de France for the first time. This will also mark only the third occasion that the race’s opening stage has been held in the UK, following the 2014 Grand Départ in Leeds, which saw further stages in Sheffield and London.

With millions of spectators expected to line the route, fans will have the chance to experience the electric atmosphere and witness the world’s best riders competing on Welsh roads. More than just a race – this is a moment that will inspire riders and non-riders alike, cementing our vision and bringing to life on the world stage that Wales really is Made for bikes.

Wales: Made for Bikes

Hosting such a prestigious event as the Tour de France Grand Départ is an unprecedented opportunity to showcase Wales as a world-class cycling nation. With its breathtaking landscapes, challenging climbs, and vibrant cycling culture, Wales is the perfect setting for an event of this magnitude. The Tour de France will shine a global spotlight on what we already know – Wales is made for bikes.

While the detailed route is yet to be announced, further updates are expected in the Autumn. In collaboration with the ASO, a route will be designed that not only pushes the world’s best riders to their limits but also creates an unforgettable spectacle for spectators. Yet, the impact of this event will go far beyond race day itself, inspiring more people to embrace cycling and showcasing Wales as a top-tier destination for the sport.

Major sporting events have the power to inspire, and the Tour de France coming to Wales will be no exception. Whether you’re a lifelong cycling fan, an aspiring racer, a social rider, or someone who’s never been on a bike, this is a chance to be part of something truly special.

For young riders, seeing the world’s best competing on home roads could be the spark that ignites a lifelong passion for cycling. For communities, the event will bring people together in celebration of sport, resilience, and achievement. For Wales as a whole, it offers a rare opportunity to inspire more people to take up cycling, helping to create a lasting shift towards greater participation in the sport.

Caroline Spanton, Chief Executive Officer of Beicio Cymru, said:

“The Tour de France coming to Wales is a huge opportunity for cycling in Wales. We have a thriving cycling community, and one that we know has huge potential to grow. “The Welsh stage of the 2027 UK Grand Depart promises to be a memorable experience for competitors and fans alike. Boasting stunning landscapes, warm and welcoming communities and an ever-growing fanbase of cycling enthusiasts, Wales will provide the ultimate challenge and a unique Welsh ‘Croeso’ for the world’s biggest cycle race.
