A new business in Gwyddgrug, near Pencader, is celebrating, following their success at the ‘National Tourism Awards for Wales’ at Llandudno last night.
Libby and Peter Newth, who set up Cambrian Cottages in Gwyddgrug, said:
“We were totally blown away to receive the ‘Bro y Byd’ Sustainability Award at the prestigious ‘National Tourism Awards for Wales’, particularly given the exceptional calibre of sustainable tourism initiatives across Wales.
This recognition means a huge amount to us, affirming that our approach of blending heritage conservation with environmental responsibility, resonates with others.
Our vision remains clear: to create a sanctuary that honours the rich culture and distinct history of this beautiful Welsh landscape while treading lightly on the earth”.
Their success follows 7 years of hard work, transforming a derelict farm into three contemporary eco-friendly holiday cottages that seek to celebrate authentic Welsh tradition.
“The farm had been abandoned for over a decade, with no proper access, electricity, water or drainage – the only water source was a spring 200m down the hill. Inside the house, we found a time capsule of the previous owners’ possessions, from WWII blackout blinds to pre-war school exercise-books.
The dilapidated barns needed urgent attention to prevent further collapse. After clearing out years of debris (and unearthing Victorian farm machinery), we bit the bullet and repaired walls, replaced most of the roof and floor – all completed during the challenges of the COVID pandemic.
After a two year planning process, we received consent to convert the barns into self-catering accommodation. Moving permanently to Wales in January 2023, we set an ambitious 12-month target to complete the conversion, working with local contractors to blend historic features with modern comforts.
Our priority has always been to prioritise the most sustainable solutions. Within the original stone walls, we created a new airtight timber frame structure, insulated with sheep’s wool and fitted with new energy efficient windows and doors. For hot water and heating, we installed a pair of air source heat pumps, providing efficient warmth year-round.
We finally opened ‘Cambrian Cottages’ in January 2024 and offer guests a genuine Welsh countryside experience in eco-friendly surroundings.
One year on, in addition to receiving the National Tourism Award, we are delighted to have been awarded both Visit Wales 4* accreditation and the Carmarthenshire ‘Best Self Catering’ Award. Yesterday, we also received a ‘Gold Award’ from Green Tourism Business, the go-to Accreditation for the Tourism Industry.
It’s been quite a day for us to receive such recognition for our work, we are hoping our commitment to sustainability resonates with guests who are looking to limit their environmental impact and appreciate our desire to positively impact the local economy”.
