Germany's first Turkish-language radio station broadcasting Turkish pop and arabesque music around the clock. Founded in 1999, the station targets Germans of Turkish descent or Germans of Turkish descent between the ages of 18-49. Reaching the Berlin region and other parts of the country, it provides listeners with travel and weather information, as well as local, national and international news.
Despite its clear apolitical orientation, Metropol FM has established itself as a major channel for Turkish-speaking music lovers in Germany. The station will broadcast a mix of genres, from pop to rock, house to kartela, and more, making the station a resource for all Turkish fans in Europe.
In addition to the flagship station of the same name, the radio network operates a number of smaller stations within and across the country. In the Berlin area alone, it has more than a million followers.
The non-political orientation is reflected in the station's programming schedule, which helps avoid any issues that might be offensive or polarizing to the station's audience. For example, the station has resisted attempts by representatives of various Turkish and Kurdish groups to change the music program or put certain items on the station's agenda.
It is not uncommon for large immigrant communities in Germany to offer many programs in their mother tongue, often broadcast on commercial local radio stations. However, this is less true for Istanbul and its environs than in other cities across the country such as Frankfurt and Darmstadt.
